I’ll start off by saying safari was everything I could’ve hoped for and more. Between the people we shared a car with, to our guide, to all of the animals we got lucky enough to see- it was perfect!
Our 3 day 2 night safari was in Chobe National Park in Botswana, and it was full on camping- no glamping. We used the company Kalahari Tours and our guide, Robson, was awesome! Our safari started off with a boat cruise along the Chobe River which divides the two countries, Botswana and Namibia. On our cruise we were able to see elephants really close up, hippos, crocodiles, Impala, and what seemed like hundreds of different bird species.
Once out boat cruise was over, we started the fun part- our game drive!! The most exciting part of the game drive was when we found lions! A male and female lion were laying out in the sun and looked exhausted, and Robson told us that since the lions were alone together, they were mating. Soon enough, they got up and did it right in front of us, it was WILD (no pun intended).
The first night of camping consisted of me badgering our guide with questions like, “what if I wake up to hyenas sniffing my tent??”, since there was no fence separating us and the animals. That’s right- the next morning we found out that hyenas actually did pass through our campsite in the middle of the night. Truth be told, they did not bother us and I managed to survive 2 nights of camping with wild animals!
If you’re thinking about doing a holiday in Africa, safari is a must. Safaris can get expensive, so make sure to look into camping instead of lodging- the full experience was so much fun and I slept like a baby both nights!
Reaction to watching lions mate!
We managed to get up close and personal to this teenage lioness
